Car and Driver Magazine shares with us their 16 favorite current production engines in their article Beating Hearts: The Greatest Engines You Can Buy Today. These engines span a variety of configurations on top of delivering the greatest combinations of performance and personality. The list is composed of four, five, six and eight-cylinder engines, turbocharged engines, as well as engines that sit under the hoods of sedans, SUVs, full-size trucks, and affordable sports cars.

One of Car and Driver Magazine’s favorite current production engines is BMW’s Twin-Turbo 4.4-Liter V-8 engine. The all-aluminum DOHC 4.4-liter, also known as the N63, has been around since 2009 and is the largest twin-turbo V-8 engine on the list.

The N63 produces 523 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque and powers a long list of BMW’s including the M550i and 750i sedans as well as the M5, M8 and the X5 M. The M’s S63 versions produce 600 horsepower at 6000 rpm and the M’s Competition models produce 617 horsepower and its 553 lb-ft torque peak lasts from 1800 rpm to 5700 rpm.

Another one of Car and Driver Magazine’s favorite current production engines is BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-Liter Inline-Six which is found in the M2 and M4.

The super-smooth engine is designed with a magesium oil pan, a forged steel crankshaft, and iron-plasma cylinder-bore surfaces. It produces 405 horsepower in the M2 Competition and 444 horsepower in the M4 Competition. BMW’s newest version, the S58, produces 473 horsepower in its base form. In Competition models, BMW boosts the output to 503 horsepower.
