Q: How does an EV (Electric Vehicle) work?
A: An Electric Vehicle (EV) uses an electric motor and a rechargeable battery to power the vehicle instead of gasoline. The battery stores electrical energy, which is then used by the motor to power the wheels, allowing the EV to move without emitting any tailpipe emissions
Q: What is the range of Electric Vehicles?
A: The Electric BMW lineup is capable of 250-330 miles of range!
Estimated Range (depends on usage/other factors)
Q: How do I find charging stations for my vehicle?
A: All BMW Electric models include charging stations programmed into the navigation! When you set a destination, your BMW will automatically consider how much charge it has, where it thinks it will need to recharge, for how long, and how to get there along the way. If you are not using your vehicle’s navigation, using Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, or any navigation app will show you charging stations when you search “Chargepoint” or “Charging Station”!
For iPhone users, Apple is adding a feature in iOS 17 that will show real-time charging availability information and let drivers choose a preferred charging network such as Electrify America, Chargepoint, and more!
For Android users, or people that don’t like Apple Maps, Google Maps also shows you real-time charger availability!
Q: How long does it take to charge an Electric Vehicle?
A: There are 3 levels of Electric Vehicle charging, each of them having different speeds, they are described below:
Level 1 – Up To 75 Hours: These are the types of chargers you plug into the regular household power outlet (AC) in your garage and leave charging your car over a long period of time, such as overnight. This is at 120V, with up to 4 miles per 1 hour of charging.
Level 2 – Up to 12 hours: This is the charging station most commonly installed in residential garages, it requires new hardware to be installed in the wall such as a different outlet type with a higher voltage. This is at 240V, with up to 30 miles per 1 hour of charging.
Level 3 Rapid charging – Around 30 Minutes: This is going to be the kind of charging stations you’ll find in large public places or parking lots, meant to get you charged up and back on the road quickly. This gives you up to 90 miles per 10 min of charging.
It’s strongly recommended that you only charge the battery up to 80% for normal day-to-day usage and only do a full charge for longer trips in order to preserve the life of the battery. You can set the threshold/charge target in the vehicle’s settings so it won’t charge past 80%.
Q: Can I install a home charger for my electric vehicle?
A: Yes, as long as you have a driveway, garage, or somewhere else to store your car, you can install an electric vehicle charger. The BMW Wallbox is a Level 2 (240V) home charger that lets you charge your all-electric BMW at a 9.6 kW speed from 0-100% in as little as 12 hours!
