The 2023 BMW 5-Series is a sporty and sophisticated car with undeniable swagger, a host of cabin accommodations and extensive powertrain choices. But what happens when it faces off against the 2023 Dodge Charger, a contemporary muscle car with a dedicated V8 and unbelievable performance?
Design & Style
The Dodge Charger is truly stunning, and is a modern update of the legendary muscle vehicles of the 1960s and 70s. It offers rear wheel drive as a standard feature while all-wheel drive is optional. Some believe that this year’s version will be the final gasoline powered variant, and that from 2024 onwards Dodge will focus on electric versions instead. The exterior is distinctive for its long and vented hood, and several paint colors return this year, namely Sublime Green, B5 Blue and Plum Crazy.
The BMW 5-Series is gorgeous without being too ostentatious, a trait that BMW has become famous for. Its cabin provides plenty of space to stretch out your arms and legs and a number of updates have been added this year, such as a powered rear sunshade for the M550i, Harmon Kardon audio system and the removal of the iDrive infotainment controls.
Technology & Safety
The BMW 5-Series is well equipped with the auto industry’s most advanced safety features and driver assistance, which includes semi-autonomous operation that links the vehicle with GPS. Its other features include pedestrian detection, emergency automated brakes, adapted cruise control, blind area monitoring and alerts for cross traffic in the rear. Its cabin perks consist of SiriusXM satellite radio, USB port, Bluetooth, twelve inch touch display, climate control, powered leather seats and the choice of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
The Dodge Charger also comes with many of the driver assistance functions found in the BMW, including emergency automated brakes, adapted cruise control, and blind are monitoring. But it lacks semi-autonomous operation, though it includes cabin perks such as wifi, eight inch touchscreens, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay as well as Uconnect infotainment.
Performance
The most powerful BMW 5-Series is the M550i, which is powered by a V8, 4.4 liter engine that is dual turbocharged and capable of accelerating from zero to sixty in about 4.1 seconds with a 155 mph top speed. Its engine sounds are delightful and the steering feedback is superb. The Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack can generate 485 horsepower with the ability to accelerate from zero to sixty in about 3.8 seconds with a maximum 132 mph top speed.
The Bottom Line
Both cars seat five passengers, come with similar safety features and are nearly tied for zero to sixty acceleration time. But the BMW 5-Series wins in a race thanks to its superior top speed, and it is also more fuel efficient at 26/23/31 mpg versus only 21/18/27 mpg for the Charger, which makes BMW the winner.
