2022 BMW X3 M vs. 2022 Genesis GV70

You may wonder what the 2022 BMW X3 M and 2022 Genesis GV70 have in common. They are both compact luxury SUVs with AWD and engines that love to rev. However, that is where the similarities stop. Each comes from a different background, with competing engineering philosophies guiding them through development. But which one is better? It all depends on what you’re looking for in an SUV: raw power or everyday comfortability.

Design & Style

  • Exterior Design

The BMW X3 M’s aggressive, sporty look sets it apart from the crowd. It has a more distinctive design than its rivals, with a low front end and a bulging hood that reveals its powerful engine. The Genesis GV70 offers a more conventional shape but stands out from other luxury SUVs. The SUV’s large grille and lights give it an imposing look on the road. The X3 M is also available in high-performance Competition trim, including unique front and rear spoilers and an updated design for its wheels.

  • Interior Design

The BMW X3 M is the clear winner in terms of interior design. It has a better layout that’s more efficient, with all the necessary functions within reach of the driver and some nice touches like rear air vents for passenger comfort. The 2022 Genesis GV70, on the other hand, has a much more cluttered look to it—there’s just too much going on in such a small space. Its infotainment system feels outdated by comparison, and it doesn’t have any vents in the back either (though they do come standard on other trims).

Technology & Safety

The X3 M is a little light on the radar regarding safety features. It only has one airbag for the driver and front passenger and two supplemental front-impact airbags. That’s certainly not bad, but you could find more in other SUVs of its class.

The Genesis GV70, on the other hand, boasts eight standard airbags (including three head-protecting side curtain bags) and rear parking sensors. In addition to its impressive standard equipment list and bumper-to-bumper warranty—it covers 7 years/100k miles per year or 10 years/160k miles combined—the GV70 offers an impressive array of safety technology systems like adaptive cruise control with stop & go functionality and lane keep assist with active steering control that helps keep you in your lane by gently turning your steering wheel when necessary.

Performance

In the engine performance department, both cars have a lot in common. Both offer a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine with 473 horsepower and 457 lb.-ft. of torque on tap. But the way they get there is very different: The BMW X3 M uses its all-wheel drive system to send power to both axles when you need it most (say, when you’re going around corners or accelerating from a stop). At the same time, the Genesis GV70 has an eight-speed automatic with manual mode that makes use of an electronic limited-slip differential at each axle for better traction control.

The Bottom Line

So, which car is the better choice for you? The BMW X3 M is more tech-heavy, with all those extra safety features and more horsepower under the hood. But the Genesis GV70 does have its advantages: It’s cheaper and has a better fuel economy. This might be your best bet if you’re looking for a luxury SUV that won’t break your bank account. But if you want something with more bells and whistles—and don’t mind paying a little extra every month—then go with the BMW X3 M!
