In the automotive world, there are two brands that you hear about over and over again: BMW and Nissan. Both companies have been around for decades and have built up a reputation for creating some of the best cars on the market. One of their recent offerings is a midsize SUV called the Rogue, which has been praised for its reliability, performance, and affordability. It’s also been compared to another popular vehicle from BMW called X1, which offers similar benefits to drivers who want something reliable yet stylish. In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at these two vehicles so that you can make an informed decision when deciding between them.
Design & Style
The 2022 BMW X1 has an unusual grille design, with two horizontal slats and one large vertical piece that stretches between them. It’s not attractive or well-proportioned, but it does lend a certain ruggedness to the front end. The circular fog lights are also nicely placed under the headlights—a nice touch that makes this SUV look like it means business.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue has a bit more of an aggressive look than the BMW X1, thanks to its angular headlights and prominent grille opening, which gives it a more muscular appearance overall. The fog lights don’t match as well with this SUV’s design as they do on the BMW X1; however, they’re still a welcome addition for any driver looking for visibility on dark roads or during inclement weather conditions (i.e., rain).
The X1’s interior is filled with handsome, high-quality materials and a tasteful design. The dashboard is simple and straightforward, and the steering wheel feels good in your hands. The seats are comfortable and supportive, though they do feel slightly undersized for taller drivers.
The Rogue’s cabin also looks great, with plenty of soft-touch materials throughout—and it doesn’t feel as fresh as the X1 because Nissan hasn’t updated it for a few years now. There are more hard plastics here than we’d like to see in an expensive crossover like this one, but at least everything is still well put together overall.
Visibility is generally good from both cabs, thanks to upright windshields that don’t block your view when you look forward or up into the sky while driving on highways (though they can be blocked by tall people sitting behind you). The Rogue’s higher seating position also makes it easier to see over other vehicles in traffic situations than the lower X1.
Technology & Safety
The X1 has a standard rearview camera, giving you a wider field of view for parking and backing up. The Rogue doesn’t offer a rearview camera system.
The X1 offers optional automatic headlight control, which automatically switches the headlights between two brightness levels based on the ambient light and your steering wheel position. The Rogue doesn’t offer automatic dimming headlights.
For a better visibility, the X1’s front wipers have an intermittent setting, so they only turn on when they sense rain on the windshield. The fluid spray won’t be a problem thanks to the X1’s standard integrated wiper blade washer system that allows you to wash your windshield without stopping or slowing down first; it also helps you clear by applying more pressure than most other cars do at high speeds, which improves wiping and ultimately visibility through rainy conditions (or snow). The Rogue doesn’t offer this feature and requires special care when washing its windshield wipers because the fluid spray can damage them over time.
Performance
The 2022 BMW X1 comes standard with a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 2022 Nissan Rogue offers a 1.5L inline-four engine rated at 201 horsepower and 225 lb.-ft. of torque when equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission (193 horses for manual).
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is this: the 2022 BMW X1 is a winner in our book. It’s got all the performance power you need and more, but it also has an affordable price tag. Plus, it looks great and offers comfortable seating for up to five adults. The only downside to owning one of these puppies is that they go fast—like really fast!
