2021 BMW 8-Series vs. 2021 Nissan GT-R

The 2021 BMW 8-Series is a spectacular car with a dynamite engine, superb grip, and an extravagant interior. But how does it compare to the 2021 Nissan GT-R, a coupe which is widely regarded for its dual clutch style transmission, incredible acceleration and state of the art tech?

Design & Style

The GT-R is Nissan’s answer to the Acura NSX, Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini. A fully equipped model costs nearly a quarter of a million dollars. It is large and wide with a centralized maw that is flanked by LEDs which extend vertically inside the hood. Its fenders are widely flared and highlighted by air extractors which have been squared off behind its front wheels. Passengers will be presented with a cabin that is ergonomic and sporty, with a centralized touchscreen, bulky seats, and lots of buttons, switches and digital gauges.

The 2021 BMW 8-Series comes in the form of a Grand Coupe with four doors. While the GT-R has a sleek and spherical exterior, the BMW 8-Series has sharpened edges. Buyers get the option of black or red brake calipers, and the seats provide outstanding comfort and back support. The vehicle sits on twenty inch wheels and the cabin is covered in upscale materials such as leather, metallic trim and authentic wooden surfaces.

Technology & Safety

BMW has built a stellar reputation for safety and the 8-Series is no exception. It is equipped with all the modern technology that drivers demand, such as lane departure alerts, emergency automated brakes, high beam headlights and driver assistance which enables the car to detect pedestrians and get out of traffic jams. Luxuries within its cabin include 10 inch touch displays, navigation which is built in, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and a 464 watt, sixteen speaker sound system from Harmon Kardon.

The Nissan GT-R is completely devoid of active safety functions. Instead, passengers will be protected by stability and traction control, antilock brakes and airbags. This technology is dated and it is unacceptable that Nissan expects consumers to pay six figures for a car that doesn’t even have modern safety gear. Luxuries within its cabin include climate control which covers two zones, eight inch displays and seats covered in synthetic suede.

Performance

The GT-R is one of the most powerful cars ever made by Nissan. Those that purchase the Nismo variant will get a V6 engine that is 3.8 liter and capable of generating 600 horsepower with 481 pounds of torque that enables it to blaze from zero to sixty in about 2.7 seconds with a 186 mph top speed. Those that purchase the BMW M8 Competition will get a V8, 4.4 liter engine that can generate 617 horsepower which allows it to go from zero to sixty in 3.3 seconds.

The Bottom Line

While power and performance are important, safety is more so, and given that fact that the BMW 8-Series uses the latest technology and the GT-R doesn’t, this makes BMW the winner.
