The 2020 BMW X5 is a beautifully crafted mid-size SUV worth every penny on its price tag. It has evolved from a car that was all about sporty driving to one with a blend of refinement, power and luxury. It is commendable for a rich classy interior, impressive infotainment system as well as the most recent safety features. It is clearly top of the premium SUV class. On the other hand, the 2020 Jeep Compass promotes the adventurous lifestyle synonymous with many Jeep models. It is good looking, easy to maneuver and features an easy to use infotainment system. However it suffers an underpowered engine and subpar interior quality.
Design & Style
The 2020 BMW X5 has a logical luxurious cabin that is made up of high quality materials all through and gifted with a number of luxury features. It also comes with a lot of charging points, heated power-adjustable seats, a power-adjustable steering column, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power rear liftgate. Available features include acoustic glass, remote start, massaging seats, soft-close doors and heated steering wheel and front armrests. Â It also offers generous space in the first and second rows as well as in the trunk. The 3rd row is less roomy though.
The Compass has a functional, spacious and comfortable interior that seats four passengers. Although the materials used are not upscale, they are acceptable. The back seat space is neither big nor small. The cargo space is also quite generous. However, its cabin lacks the appeal of a luxury sedan. It also misses out on luxurious features that are offered on the BMW X5.
Technology & Safety
Twin 12.3-inch displays give the cabin a contemporary look. One of the screens is a digital gauge display as the other controls the iDrive infotainment system found on the 2020 BMW X5. The infotainment system can be controlled by either touching the screen or using a rotary knob. Gesture controls can also be used. Apple CarPlay comes standard. Some of the key standard safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear-cross traffic alert and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous driving mode are optional.
The Compass comes with Jeep’s Uconnect system that is not only simple to use, but also has quick response to inputs. The infotainment system is well organized and controlled by a touchscreen. It also features an auxiliary input and a USB port. One department where the 2020 Jeep Compass trails is safety. It offers a variety of safety features but none of them comes standard. The available driver assistant tech includes adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and automated emergency braking.
Performance
The 2020 BMW X5 has three options in gasoline engines depending on the model. The X5 models run on a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six, a 456-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 or the gutsy 523-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. All these engines link up with an eight-speed automatic transmission and offer plenty of power for driving. A plug-in hybrid is also said to appear at some point in 2020. The X5 has a refined ride and even more stable handling than before. It also has a remarkable towing capacity of up to 7200 pounds regardless of the engine under its hood. With the 335-hp engine, the X5 earns 28mpg on the highway. When powered by the 456-hp or the 523-hp engines, it gets 23mpg on the highway.
The 2020 Jeep Compass is powered by a lethargic 4-cylinder engine that mates with a six speed manual transmission with both front and all-wheel drive. A nine-speed automatic transmission is also available. However, it is rather slow in executing shifts. The compass is more agile and responds pretty well t steering inputs. However, it experiences some lean in tight cornering. The Compass gets ratings of 29mpg on the highway.
The Bottom Line
The 2020 BMW X5 is clearly much better than its counterpart, the 2020 Jeep Compass. It is commendable for its superior performance, top quality stylish cabin and advanced safety features all of which are lacking in the Compass. It also offers more seating capacity, smooth handling and high end tech that puts its rivals to shame.
