2020 BMW X5 vs 2019 Porsche Cayenne

The 2020 BMW X5 is a masterpiece with a careful balance between power and luxury. It guarantees smooth handling, perfect suspension and more importantly, safety. All these perks, coupled with a powerful engine give the X5 an edge over its rivals. On the other hand, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne bears a striking resemblance to the original Porsche SUV introduced in 2003. It is designed to be fast and exciting to drive. Safety with the Cayenne remains a huge concern though.

Design & Style

The X5’s cabin was designed with functionality and class in mind. It is luxurious and made up of top quality materials all through. It features well positioned charging points, heated power-adjustable seats, a power-adjustable steering column, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control and a power rear liftgate. Optional features include acoustic glass, remote start, massaging seats, soft-close doors and heated steering wheel and front armrests.  Although its 3rd row is a bit cramped, there is plenty of space in the 1st and 2nd rows.

When it comes to the Cayenne, Porsche provides the option of selecting everything from seatbelt colors to the surface materials to the interior trim. While luxury heated and ventilated seats are standard, other features such as massaging front seats, power-operated liftgate, passive-entry, and four zone climate control are also available. The Cayenne is the largest Porsche SUV and it offers ample passenger capacity as well as cargo space.

Technology & Safety

The cabin of the X5 has a contemporary look with. One of the screens is tasked with controlling the iDrive infotainment system while the other is a digital gauge. The infotainment system can be controlled by touching the screen, using a rotary knob or gesture controls. Apple CarPlay is standard on the X5. Key standard safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and automated emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control and semi-autonomous driving mode are optional.

The infotainment system on the 2019 Porsche Cayenne makes use of a 12.3inh touchscreen. It features a configurable home menu with plenty of personalized settings. The system can be controlled by a rotary knob. Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay come standard. Rear seat entertainment is also available. The stand-out safety features are forward-collision warning, front and rear parking sensors and night vision camera. Available safety features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the 2020 BMW X5 offers three options. This depends on the choice of model. The X5 models are powered by a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six, a 456-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 or the powerful 523-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. All these engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and offer plenty of power for driving. Rumor has it that a plug-in hybrid is also should appear at some point in 2020. The X5 has a refined ride and even more stable handling than before. It also has a remarkable towing capacity of up to 7200 pounds regardless of the engine under its hood. With the 335-hp engine, the X5 earns 28mpg on the highway. When powered by the 456-hp or the 523-hp engines, it gets 23mpg on the highway.

With a 434-hp twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6, the Cayenne is very powerful. This can be improved to 455-hp when you combine the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with an electric motor. The engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. A 541-hp twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is also available, though it is quite expensive. There is also the option of larger wheels but this diminishes the ride quality on bumpy roads. The Cayenne earns a rating of 22mpg on the highway.

The Bottom Line

The 2020 BMW X5 is a beast on the road that really knows how to impress. It has an upscale interior, with a lot of space in its cabin as well as the trunk. It is also commendable for great performance, advanced safety features, better fuel economy and a superior infotainment system.
