You do not come across an engine that yields up to 600 plus horsepower every day. So when you get inside the new 2020 BMW M5 and it suddenly uncorks 600 plus horsepower from an advanced twin turbo V 8 engine, you know for sure you’re behind the wheels of something special. The beast features an all-wheel drive system, an 8 speed transmission system and a myriad of safety and technology features to make it what it is – a marvel!
On the other hand, the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox boasts a spacious interior and an easy to use infotainment system. It is also commendable for its fuel economy. However, its engine is somewhat lethargic with an unrefined ride.
Design & Style
The 2020 BMW M5’s features a classic cabin complete with real leather. It is fitted with plenty of standard luxury features such as ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, a power-adjustable steering column and a heated steering wheel. The seats on the M5 are sporty, supportive and as you may have already guessed, comfortable. Then there’s the driver’s seat, which is strategically positioned to enhance performance style-driving. Available upgrades that add to M5’s include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, 4-zone automatic climate control and massaging front seats. Cargo space is guaranteed.
The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox’s cabin is stylish and features durable materials. It also gets bonus points for being spacious. Both the front as well as the rear seats have enough space around them. The cabin is equipped with luxury features that add to its comfort. A variety of additional luxury features are offered on higher trims.
Technology & Safety
The 2020 BMW M5 comes with a big display that runs the iDrive infotainment system. It can be controlled using a rotary knob. Â A Wi-Fi hotspot, a 16-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, wireless device charging and Apple CarPlay integration come standard on the M5. Available features include rear-seat entertainment and the impressive Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Standard safety features such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, automated emergency braking and lane keep assist are standard on the M5. Adaptive cruise control is optional.
Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system is hosted on the Equinox. It features a 7.0 inch touchscreen above the dashboard. The system wins the hearts of many with its quick response and simplicity of use. Standard features include Android Auto, Apple Carplay, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Available safety features include lane keep assist, automated emergency braking and automatic high beam headlights.
Performance
The 2020 BMW M5 runs on a twin-turbo 4.4 liter that yields 600 horsepower and 553 pounds per foot of torque. It has unbridled acceleration and gets to 60mph in just 2.8 seconds. The M5 Competition model comes with a more potent engine with 617 horsepower. The M5 can send all of its power to the rear wheels for pure rear driving. The M5 is commendable for, great cornering grip and a well-controlled ride. Its cabin is quiet. It gets 15mpg in city driving and 21mpg on the highway.
The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox comes with a turbo 4-cylinder engine that is anything but powerful. It occasionally runs out of breath and its performance is very poor. There is also the option of a 1.5 four-cylinder engine with 170-hp. It offers better performance. However, when used with the all-wheel drive system, the Equinox struggles to accelerate. The only engine that can handle the Equinox weight well is the 2.0-liter one that is available as an upgrade. However, even this engine’s performance does not even come close to the all-powerful M5’s engine. With larger wheels, this car is not so comfortable and its ride is harsh. It gets 28mpg on the highway.
The Bottom Line
The 2020 BMW M5 impresses with a powerful engine, superior infotainment system, high-end tech, a classy cabin and better fuel economy. That along with advanced safety features and incredible handling make the M5 a must have for a car lover keen on guaranteed performance as well as comfort.
