2020 BMW 6-Series vs. 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-class

Being the sportier version of the 5-Series, the 2020 BMW 6-Series is a stunning car to look at. With an excellent diesel engine, controls and fuel-efficiency, it is surely a joy to ride in the 6-Series. On the other hand, the 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS-class is a great-looking car with many great features.

Design & Style

The 2020 BMW 5-Series has BMW’s signature driver-focused dashboard, providing comfortable reach to the controls. The controls use physical buttons and has a nice, tactile feel to them. There are multiple adjustments for the steering wheel and seats, allowing you to have a much more comfortable ride. The addition of cushioned armrests has enhanced the comfort of any ride. The interior is also trimmed with upmarket material, giving the car an absolutely luxurious look.

The 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS-class has a rather sporty style and is a rather low car. The multiple adjustments for the steering wheel and seat results in a much more comfortable ride for the driver. The full leather seats and the high quality fit and finish gives the car an absolutely luxurious look. Our only qualm about its interior would be the offset pedals that would put the driver in a slightly awkward position when driving. However, it isn’t too uncomfortable.

Technology & Safety

All 6-series models are equipped with satellite navigation, a 12 speaker hi-fi sound system, Bluetooth and other services. The iDrive infotainment system is excellent and is projected on a large 10.2-inch display. In addition to the mandatory safety features in most cars, the 4-Series has a wide range of hi-tech safety systems in place. Traffic assistant, Lane departure warnings and cruise control are some examples of the additional safety features. The 6-Series has also done marvelously well in crash test ratings.

The 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS-class includes two 12.3-inch displays – one for infotainment and the other to display the car’s gauges. While it is relatively responsive, the infotainment system isn’t as intuitive as the iDrive system found in BMW cars. The standard stereo has seven speakers and could be upgraded to the 13-speaker Burmester surround-sound stereo. Attention Assist and PRE-SAFE systems are some of the additional safety features in the CLS-class.

Performance

For a better comparison, we will compare the base versions of both models. With a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre diesel engine, the 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS-class reaches a maximum output of 241 horsepower. The 2020 BMW 5-Series has a 6-cylinder, 3.0-litre turbocharged engine that produces a maximum output of 315 horsepower. The 6-Series is arguably the sweet spot in the line-up because of its balance of fuel-efficiency, engine performance and price.

The Bottom Line

The 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS-class is an excellent car and offers many new features and design improvements from its predecessors. However, the car pales in comparison to the 2020 BMW 6-Series in many categories – better design and infotainment system. The 2020 BMW 6-Series is just that much better.
