Many automobile enthusiasts regard the 2019 Land Rover Velar as being one of the best SUVs ever made. Its stunning shape combined with its sleek cabin and modern tech makes it irresistible to many drivers. But it faces a true adversary in the BMW X7, a formidable SUV which has received acclaim for its regal interior, dynamic engines and all-wheel drive which is standardized.
Design & Style
The BMW X7 opts for a conventional look, which is marked by subtle German design cues, like fillips and filigrees. It uses a thin strip of LED style head and tail lights, with air intakes and door sills that display shiny metal. The roof pillar in the rear features the upward kink, which is similar to other BMWs, and within the cabin passengers will enjoy asymmetric pod controls that provide crisp displays with high resolution, with surfaces covered in gray wood. The Land Rover Velar is ravishing in its own right however, with a sculpted frame, extended hood and copper accents near the fenders in front. The cabin is modern, with leather covering, brushed aluminum along the dash and leather seats that are perforated.
Technology & Safety
Safety is paramount in any automobile, and Land Rover takes it seriously. The Velar is equipped with an assortment of security countermeasures, including lane departure notifications, emergency automated brakes, blind area monitoring, parking sensors, cruise control which is adaptive, and the ability to scan and interpret traffic signs. Within the cabin, drivers and passengers will be treated to keyless ignition, an audio system with eight speakers, a steering wheel wrapped in leather, climate control which is dual zone and automatic, dual touchscreens that are 10 inches, and a navigation system. The BMW X7 is outfitted with many of the same safety features, along with parking sensors, tires that run flat, large mirrors that help with backing up, lane control and frontal impact warnings. Within the cabin passengers will enjoy a moon roof that panoramic, 4 zone climate control, seats that are heated and can be adjusted sixteen ways and wireless charging for smartphones.
Performance
The BMW X7 comes with an inline 6, 3 liter engine that is single turbocharged and capable of generating 335 horsepower with 330 pound of torque. Those craving greater performance however can upgrade to the V8, 4.4 liter engine that is twin turbocharged and capable of generating 456 horsepower with 479 pond of torque. The Land Rover Velar comes with a V6 engine that is supercharged, and capable of producing 380 horsepower with 332 pound of torque.
The Bottom Line
These two SUVs are well matched and comparable in many areas. However, the Land Rover is overpriced considering that it is only mid-sized, its engines are aging and the space in the second row is cramped compared to the X7, so the BMW wins.
