The 2019 GMC Yukon is one of the most popular American SUVs available on the market today. Its formidable engines, copious interior and host of luxury features make it a force to be reckoned with. But what happens when it goes up against the 2019 BMW X5, an SUV which has received praise for its posh cabin, fluid powertrains, outstanding seating and all terrain capabilities?
Design & Style
The BMW X5 is conservative in regards to design, especially in the exterior. The prominent air intakes are balanced with its LED lights and grille. Viewed from the side, the lines are quite pronounced, with a gradual flow over the wheels in back which emphasizes the rear. The aluminum satin trim is eye catching, as are the alloy wheels. The cockpit is pristine, with controls and screens that merge together perfectly within metallic frames that are banded. The latest Yukon is curvier and more elegant than previous editions, but still maintains its commanding presence. The grille is large, with headlights that are swept back and a tailgate that is big and boxy. Lots of chrome can be seen on the outside, especially in the wheels which are 22 inches in size. Within the cabin passengers will be presented with a dashboard that is symmetrical with touchscreens eight inches in size and faux wood and stitched leather surfaces.
Technology & Safety
Each GMC Yukon is outfitted with multiple safety features, like airbags, traction and stability control, and automated emergency brakes. Also available are lane controls, headlights with automatic high beams and seats which are power adjustable, prompting the NHTSA to give the vehicle a four star rating. Perks available in the cabin included heated/ventilated seats, a moon roof, and Bose audio system with the ability to cancel noise. The IIHS is very fond of the BMW X5, awarding it the Top Safety Pick for its rollover protection, driver assist, emergency automatic brakes, frontal impact notifications, blind area monitoring and park assist. Within the cabin passengers will enjoy climate control, leather upholstery, wood trim, heats that can be heated, a roof that is panoramic and ambient lighting.
The BMW X5’s performance is simply breathtaking. It comes with a V8, 4.4 liter engine that is twin turbocharged and capable of generating 456 horsepower with 479 pound of torque, enabling it to shoot from zero to sixty in around 4.6 seconds, with the ability to reach a max speed of 155 miles per hour. The GMC Yukon also comes with a V8, that is 6.2 liter and capable of producing 420 horsepower with 460 pounds of torque.
The Bottom Line
Both of these SUVs are world class and choosing between them is no easy task. However, the Yukon has inadequate space, especially for cargo, and the BMW edges it out in safety, so the X5 wins.
