The 2019 BMW X3 is sought after for its sophisticated interior, responsive handling, excellent outward vision and generous space. How does it compare to the 2019 GMC Acadia, a highly regarded SUV with muscular looks, a strong engine, and opulent interior?
Design & Style
Like the Yukon, the GMC Acadia manages to blend curviness and muscular cues into one, an impressive design feat. It has a dual box design with wheel arches that are squared, with a strip made of chrome that extends around the two rows in front. The tail lights are large, with a chrome area connecting them, and within the cabin the design is clean cut and no nonsense. The BMW X3 has tasteful accents within its interior, with a classy design in the exterior. The intakes have been widened, with the wheels pushed near the corners and elevated glass that gives drivers and passengers expanded vision. The infotainment area is conveniently positioned in the central stack.
Technology & Safety
The BMW X3 is favored by the IIHS, which has given it a Top Safety Pick designation due to its cutting edge safety features. These include emergency brakes that are automated, cruise and lane control, driver assist that alleviates fatigue, warnings when departing lanes and blind area monitoring. Within the cabin passengers will be pampered by leather upholstery, front seats that are power adjustable, Bluetooth support, a camera for the rearview, USB ports for charging, a Harman Kardon sound system, and touchscreen with 10.3 inches. The GMC Acadia has a lot of important safety features, but only for those who get the higher end versions. It has received a five star rating from the NHTSA however, due to features such as brakes that antilock, a camera for the rearview, stability control, Driver Alert, and sensors for parking. Within the cabin passengers will enjoy heated seats, Bose audio, leather covering, and eight inch touch screens.
Performance
The GMC Acadia comes with an inline 4, 2.5 liter engine that can generate 193 horsepower with 188 pound of torque. The BMW X3 comes with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that can generate 248 horsepower with 258 pound of torque, which allows it to get from zero to sixty in fewer than 6 seconds.
The Bottom Line
Both SUVs are stunning, packed with all sorts of luxuries, and offer superb handling and performance. However, the GMC Acadia disappoints when it comes to space in the third row, which some have complained is insufficient even for children, and combined with the fact that the top safety tech is only available in the more expensive versions, the BMW X3 wins.
