The 2019 BMW X3 has received acclaim for its exceptional interior, responsive powertrains, safety features and spacious interior. But it faces a true rival in the 2019 Cadillac Escalade, an SUV which has become a household name due to its commanding appearance, outstanding ride quality and potent V8 power. Which should you buy?
Design & Style
The design of the newest Escalade hasn’t changed much from its predecessors, but it doesn’t have to, as the look is so iconic. It is an SUV with a full size frame that provides a lavish interior and riding experience as smooth as silk. Those fortunate to sit in the interior will be treated to high end wood trim and seats covered in semi aniline styled leather. The BMW X3 is equally extravagant, with lots of glass that provide excellent visibility, and beautiful shades of leather which are soothing when pressed against the skin. The cabin is airy and rich in all the amenities and gadgets that one would expect.
Technology & Safety
The BMW X3 is equipped with the industry’s most advanced safety systems. This includes lane control that is active, cruise control, blind area monitoring and driver assist. Emergency automatic brakes are standard, and passengers will also have access to a Harmon Kardon sound system, wireless charging for smart phones, and touchscreens that are 10.5 inches in size. The Cadillac Escalade is also rich in safety tech, with 6 airbags, a camera for the rearview, stability control systems, emergency automatic brakes and lane control. Within the interior, passengers will be treated to a Bose sound system, eight inch touchscreens, front seats that can be powered 12 different ways, and Apple CarPlay.
Performance
In regards to performance, the Escalade is probably one of the most powerful SUVs on the market. Each model comes equipped with a V8, 6.2 liter engine that can produce 420 horsepower with 460 pound of torque. This helps with the weight, which exceeds 5500 pounds. It has a ten speed transmission that is automatic, with magnetic dampers that are standardized. The BMW X3Â comes with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that produces 248 horsepower with 258 pound of torque, but can be upgraded to an inline 6 called the X3 M40i that is turbocharged, capable of producing 355 horsepower with 369 pound of torque, and can go from zero to sixty in about 4.6 seconds.
The Bottom Line
Both of these SUVs are flashy, commanding, and fun to drive. Although the Escalade offers superb performance, it comes at the cost of guzzling tons of premium unleaded gas, and this combined with the fact that its safety features lag behind the BMW means the X3 is the winner.
