2019 BMW X1 vs 2020 Volvo XC40

One of the welcome additions in the 2019 BMW X1 is the touchpad interface for its infotainment system. It also boasts of a standard Apple CarPlay, voice control, and navigation system.

In the case of the 2020 Volvo XC40, it has already omitted the power-folding rear seats which it launched in the 2019 version. Leather upholstery is no longer standard for this ride as well.

Design & Style

The 2019 BMW X1 is praised for holding plenty of cargo space and providing more room for five adults. Outside it, you will notice how sporty its 18-inch wheels are and how foglights, and automatic wipers highlight its modernity. It has also been blessed to include underfloor that can add up more room for storage.

The 2020 Volvo XC40 did not take much updates to improve how its previous version looks. It remains roomy to accommodate up to five people. It has a nice interior, but not as upscale as its rivals, the BMW X1 included.

Technology & Safety

There are plenty of technology features in the 2019 BMW X1. This car has Apple CarPlay integration too. It has a hefty list of standard safety features, including a rearview camera, forward collision warning, city collision mitigation, adaptive cruise, automatic high beams, and lane departure warning, among others.

The XC40, on the other hand, stuck to its usual nine-inch touchscreen for its Sensus Connect infotainment system. It takes some time getting used to the setup as functionalities are all integrated in the display. Traffic sign recognition, road departure mitigation, and oncoming collision mitigation, are also standard, together with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera.

Performance

The 2019 BMW X1 has a turbocharged, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine that can reach up to 228 horsepower. The turbocharged, four-cylinder engine in the 2020 Volvo XC40, however, reaches only up to 187 horsepower. Both cars reach a fuel efficiency rating of 23mpg for city driving, and highway driving results for the BMW is 32mpg, and 33mpg for the XC40.

The Bottom Line

A newer car like the 2020 Volvo XC40 is expected to provide a lot of great things that surpass expectations of car buyers. However, it is dismaying to point out that apart from providing a long list of safety features, it fails to impress in terms of its other technologies. This gives the BMW X1 an edge for combining great looks with remarkable functionalities. Not to forget that it also performs very well in terms of engine operations. This said. The BMW X1 wins this battle.
