The 2019 Dodge Journey has become popular due to its affordability, versatile cabin and ability to seat seven comfortably. But how does it compare to the 2019 BMW X1, a vehicle notable for its roomy cargo area, standard safety features and all-wheel drive?
Design & Style
The BMW X1 has a refined exterior with curves that flow elegantly. A kidney grille can be seen in front, with dark, sophisticated coloration that magnifies its presence. Within the cabin, the SUV has a centralized screen that gets most of the attention due to its position on the dash, but the wooden accents and leather coverings look and feel great. The Dodge Journey has a bulky frame with a grille that has been squared off. Its appearance is rugged overall, but in a faux way. The glass is un-tinted and the wheels are made of durable steel, with chrome rails along the roof. The interior uses a soft contour with plastics that are grained, with some mesh and leather trim thrown in for good measure.
Technology & Safety
Unfortunately the Dodge Journey has received low safety scores. Because it is aging, it lacks many of the state of the art features seen in the X1. It does have a camera for the rearview, but lacks emergency automatic brakes or frontal impact warnings. The NHTSA still gave it a four star rating overall, and within the cabin passengers will enjoy perks such as USB ports, power locks and windows, Bluetooth support and touchscreens which are 4.3 inches. The BMW X1 has emergency automatic brakes as a standard feature, along with the ability to detect pedestrians, warnings when departing lanes and high beams which are automated. Within the cabin passengers will enjoy a steering wheel wrapped in leather, Apple CarPlay, seats that can be power adjusted, touchscreens which are 6.5 inches and USB ports.
Performance
The BMW X1 has both a solid transmission and engine. The turbo 4 with 2 liters is capable of generating 228 horsepower with 258 pound of torque, allowing it to shoot from zero to sixty in around 6.6 seconds. The Dodge Journey has a inline 4 engine which is 2.4 liter and capable of generating 173 horsepower with 166 pound of torque.
The Bottom Line
Safety is one of the most important features in any vehicle, and the Dodge Journey falls short. This combined with its limited features and dated frame, along with the fact that the X1 surpasses it both in performance and interior amenities means the BMW wins.
