The 2019 BMW 5 Series has gained supremacy due to its stellar performance, spacious cabin, sharp looks and standardized safety tech. But it faces a new rival in the form of the 2019 Cadillac ATS, a car which has garnered praise for its handling, diverse infotainment, class, and incredible customization. Which of them should you buy?
Design & Style
The Cadillac ATS is regal and sophisticated, the type of car that would be driven by CEOs and other high powered individuals. The outer edges are rounded, with a front bumper that has been lowered and headlights that are swept back. Inside, the low dash is combined with controls that are well positioned, with eight inch touchscreens that are readily accessible. The capacitive switches nearby will appeal to those who have driven other Cadillacs. Design wise, the BMW 5 Series is conservative, with a serious yet handsome cabin and a beak that has been tapered with sharpened lines along the sides and a rear that is not as bulbous as its predecessors.
Technology & Safety
The IIHS has praised the BMW 5 Series, giving it the Top Safety Pick award. Emergency automatic brakes now come standard, and it has a bunch of other features that are designed to keep passengers safe at all times, such as driver assist, the ability to detect nearby pedestrians, alerts for cross traffic, and lane and cruise control. A camera with surround view and parking sensors can also be added for good measure. Within the cabin passengers will be greeted to leather seats that can power adjusted, two zone climate control, a sun roof, touchscreens which are 10.2 inches and Bluetooth support. The Cadillac ATS is well equipped with many safety features of its own, like frontal impact warnings, assistance with staying in lanes, alerts for cross traffic, high beams which are automated, and a reinforced shell. Creature comforts within the cabin include wireless charging for smartphones, leather seats, 4G capability, a sunroof, and touchscreens which are eight inches.
Performance
The Cadillac ATS performs like a thoroughbred horse. It comes with an inline 4, turbocharged engine that is 2 liter and capable of producing 272 horsepower that is wedded to an eight speed automatic. The BMW 5 Series has a turbo 4 engine that can produce 248 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
Choosing between these two beauties is no easy task. Both cars are fast, sexy, and packed with lots of safety and luxury features. The main downside to the Cadillac ATS is that the back seat is too small for a car of its class and price tag, and many of its best safety features aren’t even available in the lower trims, so the BMW 5 Series wins.
