The 2019 Cadillac XT5 is an outstanding vehicle that has received praise for its regal interior, V6 power and ease of handling. However, the 2019 BMW 2 Series is thrilling to drive, with an opulent interior and manual transmission which is a throwback to its predecessors. Which of them should you buy?
Design & Style
The BMW 2 Series is distinctive for its extended hood, large wheels and two doors. Its shoulders are more aggressive than its predecessor, the BMW 1 Series, and it has extra glass. The nose has been sharpened and flanked by large intakes on each side with a dual kidney grille in front. The Cadillac XT5 comes in three new colors, which are Shadow Metallic, Dark Mocha Metallic and Red Horizon Tintcoat. Like previous editions, the designers at Cadillac opted for a sharpened exterior with headlights that are swept back and custom vertical LEDs. Inside, the infotainment center and dashboard are broad, flat, nice to look at and easily accessible.
Technology & Safety
The Cadillac XT5 is outfitted with numerous safety countermeasures, including a complete airbag suite as well as stability control, but only those who buy the premium trim levels will get access to the most state of the art features. Aside from base, the upper trim levels include Premium Luxury, Premium and Platinum. The BMW 2 Series has received a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS, and comes with standard features such as emergency automatic brakes. Its wheels are 17 inches in size and within the interior drivers and passengers will have access to infotainment displays that are 6.5 inches, with leather covering, Bluetooth and USB and Apple CarPlay.
The BMW 2 Series comes with a turbo 4, 2 liter engine that is capable of producing 248 horsepower. Drivers who crave more performance can upgrade to the V6 variant that produces 335 horsepower. Although these same engines appear in other BMW models, in the 2 Series they are less restricted by weight. Rear wheel drive is also available, along with a six speed manual transmission. The Cadillac XT5 comes with a V6, 3.6 liter engine that can produce 310 horsepower, that is wedded to an eight speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is also available, but only in the highest trim.
The Bottom Line
Cadillac and BMW are respected automakers who are the masters of their craft, so choosing between these two beauties is no simple matter, as both vehicles are gorgeous, comfortable to drive and handle, and powerful. Unfortunately, the infotainment within the Cadillac is too complicated to use in comparison to the BMW, and its best safety features are only available if buyers spend thousands of dollars more, so the BMW 2 Series wins.
