The BMW Concept i4 – What We Know So Far

March 6th, 2020 by

The BMW Concept i4 will generate zero local emissions all while staying true to the luxurious modern and elegant sporty design BMW is known for. The BMW Concept i4 represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, which is said to enter production in 2021. BMW USA News shares with us what we need to know about the new pure-electric Gran Coupe which will be the BMW Group’s first all-electric model in the premium midsize class.

Exterior

BMW Concept i4 is structured with a long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs. The new model offers a high level of everyday use and practicality as well as a larger interior. The model is painted with a modern paint shade called Frozen Light Copper. Its blanked off kidney grille and clear aero lips provide detail examples of sophisticated airflow engineering. Its wheel rims are also one of a kind to the model and have been designed exclusively for the BMW Concept i4.

The closed-off kidney grille and the headlights represent the connection between the past and future of BMW. The new kidney grille serves as an “intelligence panel” that houses various sensors since the model is not equipped with a combustion engine.

Interior

The information display and Control Display are merged into a single unit inclined towards the driver. The slim BMW Curved Display covers a large section of the area in front of the driver and above the centre stack, all while giving the interior of the vehicle a very modern feel. The three Experience Modes; “Core,” “Sport,” and “Efficient” allow for the user to experience different displays and graphics to change the overall feel of the interior.

Warm Gold Bronze accent strips that blend to chrome give the interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for the seats are composed of microfibre with line graphics and natural leather tanned using olive leaf which help set a high-quality and sustainable finish on the interior. The back seats of the i4 offer rear-seat passengers much more headroom and legroom than expected from a coupe.

Sound

The sound of the BMW Concept i4 was developed under the brand name of BMW IconicSounds Electric by Hans Zimmer together with BMW Sound Designer Renzo Vitale. The sound worlds of the BMW Concept i4 range from the driving sounds in “Core” mode to the more intense and pronounced sounds of “Sport” mode. The sounds of the door opening and the starting scenario are also elements of this unique sound design.
