Comfort Access BMW Key Battery Replacement
This key is used in many BMW models including 1, 3, 5, 7, X3, X5, X6 Series. To replace your Comfort Access BMW Key Battery, you will need a CR2032 battery. If your key won’t open, you may have the non-comfort access version which has a built-in rechargeable battery.
- Press the small tab in the key fob and pull to remove the valet key
- After the valet key is removed, you will notice a small access port on the key fob. Use the valet key or a flat screwdriver to remove the key battery cover.
- Once removed, you will see the battery. Remove the dead battery and replace it with a new one.
Non-Comfort Access Key Battery Replacement
If you have a BMW key that has a side indent, this means you have a rechargeable battery. Therefore, you cannot open the battery case. This battery charges when it is inserted in the ignition.
If the battery has completely died which is typical on a 10-year old car, you can open the case but it will require cutting the plastic part of the key. Visit Competition BMW of Smithtown and let one of our highly-trained technicians fix your battery for you.

Hi Susan, we have key batteries in stock at our Parts Department here at Competition BMW of Smithtown!
Do you know what battery a 2 series convertible key fob needs?
Hi Rachel, it depends on what 2 series model year you have. If you have the diamond key fob, the battery is a VL2020 battery however the battery in this key is not designed to be replaced. We have key batteries in stock at our Parts Department. Our team can help you with a key replacement or a new battery. Feel free to reach out to our Parts Department at (888) 683-6780 with any questions or concerns you may have.
Good Morning
I have a 65 plate BMW 1 series and I think the battery has gone on my key thob as it won’t allow me to start the engine until I put the key thob up to the steering wheel. Can you please advise what battery I will need?
Thanks
Kerrianne
Good morning Kerrianne, if you have a Comfort Access BMW Key Battery you will need a CR2032 battery. If your key won’t open you may have the non-comfort access version which has a side indent and means you have a built-in rechargeable battery. You cannot open the battery case on the non-comfort access keys. This battery charges when it is inserted into the ignition. Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out to our Parts Department at (888) 683-6780 if you have any other questions or concerns!
Hello,
I have a 2007 530XI with a rechargeable key battery that is no longer holding it’s charge. According to this article, it says you are able to replace the battery in the non-comfort access key by scoring the edges to open the key fob, however when I called the Parts Dept they said this is not accurate and that the entire fob needs to be replaced. Is this article correct and I should call the service dept for assistance with opening the key and changing the battery? Or is the article inaccurate and I will need to replace the entire key?
Thank you!
Hi Michael, the non-comfort access keys are rechargeable but if your key battery has completely died, you may need to replace the entire key. Although the key can technically be opened, we strongly suggest seeing a professional instead to determine whether or not you need a battery replacement or a key replacement. Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out to us with any other questions or concerns you may have.
