About Selden, NY

Selden is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York. The area was once known as the Westfield or Westfields. Back in 1916, Suffolk County opened its Tuberculosis Sanatorium in an area that was a part of Holtsville. Some of its original buildings were used as the main campus of the Suffolk County Community College in 1961, where there are over 11,000 enrolled students today.

Most of the commercial development in Selden is located in the New York State Route 25, the primary road in the hamlet. There are also a couple of shopping centers along Middle County Road, including the first Westfield Shopping Center that opened in 1972. Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips, a fast-food seafood restaurant chain was very popular in the late 1970s with over 800 stores. Selden has one of the only seven locations that remain at present.
