The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses from motor vehicle crashes. The IIHS fulfill their mission to reduce these losses by researching and reporting on crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and roadway design. Every year, IIHS evaluates vehicles and awards the safest cars in a crash with Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ Awards. To earn a Top Safety Pick Award, a new vehicle must earn ratings of Good in all IIHS crash tests, except for the passenger-side small overlap front test, where a score of Acceptable or Good is required. The vehicle also needs to earn an Advanced or Superior rating for front crash prevention as well as a score of Acceptable or Good for its headlight performance. To earn a Top Safety Pick+ Award, vehicles need to receive scores of Good on all tests, including the difficult passenger-side small overlap front test and headlight performance. They also need to score a rating of Advanced or Superior for front crash prevention. Four BMW models won Top Safety Pick+ Awards and one BMW model won a Top Safety Pick Award. The 2019 BMW 3 Series 4-door Sedan won a Top Safety Pick+ Award for the Midsize Luxury Cars category. The 2019 BMW 5 Series 4-door Sedan won a Top Safety Pick+ Award for the Large Luxury Cars category.
