Amid the deluge of news about unemployment, DOW volatility, fast-growing nationwide debt, we think you'll find this story a most welcome, break in the proverbial clouds. BMW is planning to make significant investments in its production plant situated in South Carolina, both in terms of resources and energies.
To be clear, the German automaker has already invested a substantial sum launching two new workforce programs: the BMW Scholars recruitment program and Associate Family Health Center wellness facility. As, of August 3, they're planning to invest even more and create an additional 100 jobs for engineers, IT gurus, product management associates and other professional workers.
Speaking on BMW's impactful decision, Harold Kruger, BMW Group Board Member explained, "For us, sustainability is not just about building the most efficient vehicle in the most productive facilities. It's also about accepting responsibility for decisions that affect the future development of our associates."1
Needless to say, the governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley was thrilled to hear the announcement. Afterward, he said "BMW is a perfect corporate example of manufacturing excellence in South Carolina. They understand what it means to take care of and invest in their employees. These quality improvements and hires are why their employees invest in the quality of their product and are loyal to the company. We're proud that they call South Carolina home."2
In 2011 alone, the BMW facility in South Carolina is slated to put out over 260,000 units to more than 130 geo markets across the globe. Consumer demand for BMW is, in fact, so strong that beginning this fall, the American plant will transition to a six-day work week.
